When to seek professional help

While grief is different for everyone , there's no timeline and no "right" way , there are times when professional support is especially important. Consider reaching out to a therapist or counselor if:

  • Your grief is interfering with your ability to function day to day for an extended period
  • You're having thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life
  • You're using substances to cope in ways that feel out of control
  • You feel completely disconnected from yourself or reality
  • You're experiencing symptoms of depression that don't lift , loss of appetite, inability to sleep (or sleeping all the time), persistent numbness
  • You feel like you're not making progress or moving forward , and that feeling is causing you distress
  • The people who care about you are expressing concern
